Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): engine dies, carburetor body, sectional index

Question
I have a 1983 3.5 briggs engine model 92908 on a Jacobson mower that quit running a few years ago, just slowed down and died. I have put gas in it and cleaned it up. the engine starts right up and runs strong for about 3 min. then loses power and dies. if i leave it set awaile It will start and do the same thing. full of new oil and doesn,t seem to freeze up. Thanks for any help again.

Answer
Hello Jerry:

Since this Unit has Not been Used for a Few Years, then I Suggest you First,  **Remove, Disassemble and Soak the Carburetor and Tank Overnight in Carburetor Cleaner (I Use Gunk). I have Found that Most People can Use a Breakdown/IPL and Disassemble the Carburetor Enough for Proper Cleaning. You Only have to Remove the Bowl (if Applicable)(Remove the Carburetor from the Tank on this Model), Remove the High Speed Valve (#681A). Then Soak the Carburetor Body in a 1 Gallon Can of Gunk Carburetor Cleaner Overnight. The Can has a Parts Tray Inside it for the Small Parts. Once the Carburetor is the Cleaner, you can Replace the Lid for Safety and to Prevent Accidental Spillage. Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air. Make Sure the Pickup Tube Screens are Clean and Replace the Diaphragm and Spring. ** You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model (5 or 6 Digits) and Type Numbers (first 4 digits Only). Example: 92908-????. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Select Sectional Index. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. The Carburetor May have been the Cause for the Original Problem. If the Engine Still Slows and Quits, then Check the Compression when the Engine Quits. If the Compression is Lower than 80PSI, there May be a Problem with the Valve Clearance or with the Rings. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
