Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere 318, john deere 318, spec numbers

Question
Hey John,

I was having trouble with my 318, It obviously has a loss of power.  It starts very hard and doesn't always stay running. -10 temps this morning probably didn't help. I replaced the fuel filter, tested the voltage regulator: 12.3 volts turned off to 13.5 volts running (my battery tested ok, but I had problems with the battery running down, so I tested the regulator, it could be a separate problem).  I noticed alot of air blowing from the exhaust side of the tractor, with is also he same side that the oil filter is on.  That didn't seem to normal to me(maybe a gasket leak).  Please Help.  Thanks

Answer
Hello Dan:

What is the Battery Voltage when the Starter is Engaged? If the Voltage Drops Below 10.5 when the Starter is Turning, then Check the Starter for Binding/Dragging. If the Starter Draws More Voltage than Normal, the Battery Does Not have the Voltage to Fire the Coil Properly and the Engine will be Hard to Start. Have you Checked the Point Set (Depends on the Engine Model). Send me the Model and Type or Spec Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine and Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers and Click Find. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
