Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Honda starting problems, carburetor body, vacuum leaks

Question
QUESTION: I have a Champion generator unit with a Honda 11hp motor. Being a Champion they didn't put much information on the motor but  it is very much like a GX340.
The unit won't start unless i put a small amount of gas on the air cleaner foam. Once it starts it runs fine. I have disassembled the carb and cleaned it thourghly. It has no vacuum leaks at the gaskets. There is an electric seloniod on the bottom of the fuel bowl. I am not sure how it gets the current it requires to open the seloniod valve. Perhaps this could be bad or the supply could be faulty.
Any ideas?

ANSWER: Hello Mike:

Send me the Model Numbers Off the Unit, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. From your Description, it Sounds like the Choke Passage is Restricted with Varnish.  Remove, Disassemble and Soak the Carburetor Overnight in Carburetor Cleaner (I Use Gunk). I have Found that Most People can Use a Breakdown/IPL and Disassemble the Carburetor Enough for Proper Cleaning. You Only have to Remove the Bowl, Float Pin, Float (if Applicable)  and Needle Valve and Any Adjustment Screws that Go Into the Carburetor Body. The Welch Plugs Do Not have to be Removed. Then Soak the Carburetor Body and Parts in a 1 Gallon Can of Gunk Carburetor Cleaner Overnight. The Can has a Parts Tray Inside it for the Small Parts. Once the Carburetor and Parts are in the Cleaner, you can Replace the Lid for Safety and to Prevent Accidental Spillage. Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air. Install New Parts if Required. If you Removed the Govrnor Arm to Remove the Carburetor, then Reset the Governor. **To Reset the Governor; Loosen the Governor Arm Bolt and Turn the Governor Shaft Clockwise Until it Stops. Using the Governor Arm Hold the Carburetor to Full Throttle. Now with the Shaft Full Clockwise and the Governor Arm and Carburetor Held at Full Throttle, Tighten the Governor Arm Bolt. If the Engine Still Runs Full Throttle, then Reverse the Rotation of the Governor Shaft, but Still Hold the Carburetor at Full Throttle with the Governor Arm. If it Still Runs at Full Throttle, then Check the Internal Governor.** If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck

QUESTION: Hello John
Thanks for your response. Here is the information on the unit. I am working on a Champion generator the number stamped on the block of the motor is 05061396  There is a tag on shroud with the number 5MAR68G1893. That is all that I can find anywhere on the unit.
I have a Honda EB 5000 generator with the same motor in fact they are almost identical. The difference is that it starts great. The information on it is: Block number GC05-2914018.
I took the solenoid from the Honda and put it on the Champion and still had the same results.
The carb is a clean as a new one, I cleaned it in carb cleaner and blew out all the orifices with compressed air.
Thanks for the info on the governor arm I know that process. I have worked on small and large engines for many years but this one has me stumped.
Thanks for the blessings I return it to you. You might like to know you are helping a group on Missionaries at a mission hospital in Colon, Honduras. Praise God for the Internet so we can communicate.

Answer
Hello Again Mike:

Thanks for the Good Words and the Numbers. The Anti-Diesel Solenoid Will Prevent the Engine from Running, Not Make it Hard to Start. Either the Carburetor Still has Varnish in the Choke Passage and Requires Another Good Soaking or the Valves May Require Resetting. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower/Engine at this Site Addy, http://hayward.arinet.com/scripts/EmpartISAPI.dll?MF&app=ASP&lang=EN&TF=Mainfram and Select the Catalog American Honda. Select the Engine File and then Scroll Down to your Engine Model and Select it for Online Viewing. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.
