Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Recoil pullstart 5Hp Tecumseh circa 1975 Canadiana Snowblower, canadiana snowblower, starter rope

Question
Hi Howard hope you can help.  Iwas replacing the pullrope after breaking it. took off the pull mechanism unit --replaced rope -- had touble realigning coil spring onto backing cover plate--(rope too long-too short etc)then ... undid the screw holding the semi circle metal piece that rotates against a "release or engage latch clip" ??  -- there was a spring behind the semi-circle and screw.  I believe I reassembled properly but now after 5 or 6 starts or pulls on the starter rope---the rope and mechanism will not rewind.  Dis-assembly again shows the screw has backed itself off and is totally loose inside-therefore unable to engage???  I tried a drop of locktite on the screw against the metal plate(semi-circle latch) to no avail -wouldn't stick.. Tightening the screw hard against the semi-disk and spring results in no rotation or return at all...  What am I doing wrong ??  Should I look for a new "pullstarter recoil as a bolt on unit" OR???
Hope this wasn't too long for a description.  Where does one find parts ?? so far I have found that MTD is a good fit for Drive and gear parts.
Can you help or suggest?
Thanks Dennis

Answer
Dear Dennis,

Without the model and serial no. off of the engine it's hard to say too much.  It sounds like you messed up with either the disassembly or assembly procedure. Generally speaking you should not have had to: "realign the coil spring onto the backing plate cover." The Tecumseh manual I have in front of me says that " Rope replacement can be done without the starter being disassembled on vertical pull starters that have "V" notches in the bracket.

I'd suggest picking up a Tecumseh Technicians Handbook - 3 - 11 HP, 4 cycle , L-Head Engines [around $15].  in Chapter 5 [page 35 - 38] there is a comprehensive procedure guide [with graphic steps].  Tecumseh's phone no. is 262-377-2700, or by fax 262-377-4485.
As you have found out, sometime a simple job can result in major headaches.

Good Luck,
Howard
