Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Tecumseh engine speed control, control question, engine id

Question
QUESTION: My new snow blower has a Techumseh engine model LH195SP. The speed control has only one speed, very fast. The "Stop" and "Choke" positions work but nothing in between. The very high speed concerns me.

ANSWER: Hi Larry,

I'm unable to locate the engine LH195SP. I believe that you are providing the model no. of the actual snowblower.  In any event, generally speaking about speed, what you are saying about the speed, does this relate to the auger speed or travel speed?  I've never seen a snowblower with a control for engine speed.  There's only one speed at which snowblowers throw snow [fast].  It has to be like this because you have to be able to project the snow away.  You control the distance [of the throw] with the upper section of the chute, the one that bends up and down.  If you have the correct engine model get back to me.  If you think the blower is not working properly contact your dealer.

QUESTION: Thanks for the come back. The snowblower is an MTD model 3AA. It has a Tecumseh Snow King Engine. The front cover of the manual and engine id decal lists it as LH195SP.The engine has the following controls. 1. "Choke control". 2. "Control Lever" with the following Stop, Slow, Run, Fast, Choke, and Primer. After starting the engine the Manuel says to "move the engine speed control to desired speed in the run range". I assume that this is the engine speed and not the running or awger speed.

Answer
Larry,

According to the Tecumseh manuel I am reading, you start by setting the engine control to Fast, set the choke to full choke,  hold the primer button down for a second each time you press it [twice or three times], after the engine starts you release the started button or ignition key.  Move the choke control to 1/2 choke until the engine is smoothly running. Next move the choke to the no choke position.  You THEN move the desired engine speed control to the desired speed in the "RUN" range. The turtle symbol obviously is the slow position and the rabbit is the fast setting.  I believe this speed relates to the speed you would like your machine to self-propel itself forwards or backwards.

Hope this helps you out.
