Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Cub Cadet HDS 2135, kohler command, hp engine

Question
QUESTION: Hello... I have a Cub Cadet HDS 2135 with a Kohler Command OHV 12.5 HP engine. I did not see any more info on the motor it was getting dark on me. If you need more info let me know and I will try to look at it when it is daytime. Anyway I checked the plug wire for spark and there was  none. If I understand from some of the previous answers the safety switches don't prevent firing just starting (turning starter). If this is correct do I need to look at the coil, ignition switch, ect? I have a volt meter if you can steer me in the right direction. Thanks In Advance!

ANSWER: Hello Carlton:

Lets Check the Coil/Ign Module First. Remove the Spark Plug. Wrap a Wire Around the Threads and Attach the Other End of the Wire to the Engine Block Turn the Engine and See if the Plug Fires. If No, then Disconnect the Shut Off Wire  at the Control Bracket First, Check for Fire at the Plug. If Still No Fire at the Plug; Then Disconnect the Shut Off Wire at the Coil (usually requires removal of the blower housing) and Check for Fire at the Plug. If No Fire at the Plug , then the Coil/Ign Module is Bad. The Coil/Ign Module to Flywheel Gap is .020in. On Some Model JD Engines, there is a Igniter that Goes Bad and Not the Coil. The Igniter is the Same as an Ignition Module. If the Plug Fires at Anytime During these 2 Checks, then a Safety Switch or Wire May be the Problem. Yes the Engine will Turn Even with a Bad Safety Switch. The Blade Safety is Usually the Cause of this. The Starter Turns and The Engine Doesn't Fire is an Indication of a Bad Coil/Ign Module or a Faulty Blade Safety Switch. The Clutch Safety Prevents the Starter from Engaging so the Mower Does Not Move when the Starter Turns the Engine. The Seat Safety is Designed to Stop the Engine if the Blades are Engaged or the Clutch Safety is Not Engaged when you Leave the Seat. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

QUESTION: Hello John... I removed the spark plug connected the spark plug wire back up and wrapped a copper wire around the threads and held it to the block and no spark as I turned the engine over. The next thing you said to do is disconnect the shut off wire from the control bracket. What do you mean by control bracket? Do you mean a wire on the PTO switch just not sure what you mean. Thanks for your patience, they don't call me a CREATIVE IDIOT for nothing! Carlton

Answer
Hi Again Carlton:

LOL. I'm Not Going to Comment on that One. On Your Mower the Cut Off Wire Goes Straight from the Ign Switch Through the Safety Circuit and then to the Coil/Ign Module/Magneto. Unplug the the Wire (or All the Wires) that Go Up Under the Blower Housing (Metal Engine Cover). Check for Fire at the Plug. If No Fire at the Plug, then the Coil/Ign Module/Magneto is Bad. If the Plug Fires, then a Safety Switch is Causing the No Fire Problem. You can View a Breakdown of the Mower at this Site Addy, http://www.emerichsales.com/home.asp and Select Shop Online, Parts and Accessories. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM (Cub Cadet) and Enter the Proper Model Numbers (2135). Then Double Click on your Model. Now Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. Hope this Helps.
