Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): john deere 318, john deere 318, purple wire

Question
Hi Paul, initially, owner says engine would run and then suddenly die. Starter switch was replaced by him. Wires had been removed from solenoid, also three connected black wires. I replaced wires without a diagram. Now, engine will start and run, but only with switch in start position. Help, Thanks Henry.

Answer
On a Deere black wires are always grounds.  I'm assuming your solenoid is under the battery box.  There should be a purple wire attached to the small post on the side of the solenoid.  One big post should have only the starter cable attached.  The other big post should have the battery cable and the small wire you now have on the wrong side of the solenoid.
