Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Blades Wont Engage, thick grass, baldes

Question
I have a Craftsman 48 " Rider Model # 917.272242.  I was mowing some thick grass today when my engine quit and white smoke started to come from under the deck.  I let it cool down and it started up just fine and I drove it to my garage. I completely cleaned under the deck, but the baldes won't engage.  I have an electronic clutch.  Should I replce the v-belt and see if that works or do you think I need a new clutch. I'm pretty handy, but how hard is the clutch to install myself.

Thanks,

John

Answer
Hello John:

Check the Belt First. The Smoke from Under the Beck is a Good Indicator you Burnt the Belt. With the Switch in the On Position, Turn the PTO On and Off. Do you Hear the PTO Clutch Engage? If Yes, then the PTO Clutch should be Good Unless you Burnt the PTO Clutches. From your Description, you Didn't have Smoke Coming from the PTO. Go to this Site Addy, http://www3.sears.com/ and Enter the Model Numbers in the Search Box at the Upper Left and Click Go. Then Visually Verify the Equipment and Click Continue. Now you can Select Either View Diagram or View Parts List. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let Me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
