Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs 14.5 Starting Problem/Huskee Riding Mower, fly wheel, push mower

Question
Dear Micheal:

I have B/S model # 287707 Type: 0224.  I had a bad fly wheel so I replaced flywheel and gear.  When I tried to start it after installation,  it shears the keys.  How much torgue should I give the large bolt at the top of the flywheel?  I tried about 33 lbs but that may not be enough?  I have replaced the sparkplug, I have added a new Walboro fuel selenoid. The manifold at the front of the engine runs red hot. The fuel selenoid was installed to fix that, it didn't change that.
Do you have any ideas?   Do you need any more info?  I would appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks a Million!!

Answer
Hi Lloyd,

The flywheel should be torqued to 65 Ft. Lbs.
On a direct push mower the key will shear if the blade is loose but your blade/s are isolated through a belt.  Maybe an advanced ignition timing is causing a kick back.  The new flywheel may be incorrect.

Good luck,
Michael
