Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): white smoke/gas and oil mixing, crankcase pressure, crankcase breather

Question
i have 18 single cylinder brigss engine. it is on 42 inch murray. this engine will run fine for several cuttings, then the crankcsase fills up with some gas, above the safe dipstick line, and then it comes back thru the breather tube. if I drain all oil/gas it will run fine for awhile. then it smokes out the muffler. I have researched and it seems the crankcase vent has a filter , it is supposed to be by the air filter, but my parts lists shows no such vent, only a reed breather which means the flywheel must be removed to get at it. is this correct? did a compression check and it is fine and holds.
model 31000 {31d777} type 0235 any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Jack
ok- if you're getting fuel into your crankcase- you have a carburator issue thats continously dumping fuel into the cylinder.

If your crankcase breather is clogged- you'd get oil up into the air cleaner because of crankcase pressure.

Most likely the needle valve has failed on the float in your carburator float bowl.
Check that and lemme know
