I have a Craftsman riding mower with a 26 horse Briggs.  It has about 80 hrs. on it.  Just recently I changed the oil after I noticed it had gotten quite low.  After I changed the oil with 5W 30 it began to smoke.  I changed it again with SAE 30 which is recommended for above 32 degrees.  It still blows smoke.  Mostly it is when I initiate a load on the engine like when I pull the knob for the blades to run or if I run over a heavy patch of grass.  It is burning up about a quart of oil every hour and blows constantly.  It seems to smoke also when running down a hill.  Any ideas?  I have already tried the choke adjustment with no luck.  Did I burn the cylindars?  Thanks,
Doug

 Hello Doug:

Sounds like you have Major Problems here, But before that lets Check some other things First.  Check the Crankcase Vent. Make Sure the Vent is NOT FILLED with Oil. If the Vent has Filled with Oil it Cant Work. If not Working, Pressure Builds Up in the Crankcase and Oil is Forced into the Breather and Out Around the Exhaust Valve Stem. This causes Loss of Oil and Smoking. If the Engine was Over Filled by as Little as a PINT; it is Possible for Oil to have Filled the Vent. Wash the Vent with a Cleaning Solution and Flush ALL the Oil From the Vent and it Should be OK. This as as long as Rust isnt the Cause of the Vent Not Working. If you Still have the Smoking and Oil Loss, you will need to Overhaul the Engine. The Cylinders and/or the Rings Are Trashed. If the Cylinders are Not to Badly Damaged. You may be able to ReRing the Engine. Thats Later if we have to. Let me know what you find.

 Good Luck

John,

Thankyou, I think this could be something.  I do believe that I overfilled the oil recently.  How do I find this crankcase vent and what does it look like?

Thanks,  Doug

Answer
 Hello Doug:

The Crankcase Vent has a Rubber Tube Leading from it to the Breather or the Carb Intake. Its approx 2'wide and 3'long and has 2 bolts 5/16th heads that hold it into the side of the block. It should be just below the Carb.

 Good Luck
