Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs&Stratten engine starting problem, float bowl, tank fuel

Question
Hi, I have a mower with a Briggs & Stratten engine. It will not start until I take off the float bowl and put it back on without any other changes. I did notice that after it starts if you tilt the front of the mower up the engine will sputter and die unless you quickly lower back it on the ground. It will restart if it dies but the next time I use the mower I again have to drop and reattach the float bowl to get it to start. Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Steve,

The float, needle or seat, is probably not allowing a good fuel flow.  Check the following: The float should be adjusted parallel to the bowl gasket when the needle is closed.  The needle and seat may be sticking and in need of replacement.  There may be dirt or gummed fuel causing a problem.  Check for a good fuel flow from the tank fuel line at the carb inlet.

Let me know how you make out.
