Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): McCulloch, mcculloch chainsaw, diaphram

Question
Hi.  Bought an gocart with a McCulloch chainsaw engine.. I don't think it has been started for quite some time.  Lots of spark.  I cleaned up the carb but cannot seem to start wont even sputter.  I cannot smell any gas.  Could a jet be plugged?  How far in should I turn the h and L screws?

Thanks for all your help.

Bryan

Answer
Hi Bryan,

Yes, a jet could be plugged.  Try to start it while squirting fuel or starting fluid into the carb intake.  If it starts and you can keep it running by adding fuel, then the carb most likely has dirt, debris or gummed fuel inside.
You will need to remove the carb, disassemble it, clean all the small internal openings and blow it out with compressed air.   Probe each and every hole with a small wire.   Adding a carb rebuild kit, including a diaphram, wouldn't hurt either.
The low speed mixture screw is set at 3/4 turn out.  The high speed mixture screw should be at 1&1/2 turns out.

Let me know how you make out.
