Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): head-bolts, head bolts, deep holes

Question
I am replacing the head gasket on a 8hp,BS Snowblower engine.Model #190402, Type 0989 01, Code 78080511. I didn't know the bolts were different lengths, and would like to know how to determine thier original position, and what is the torque ft\lbs for this head. Thank you

Answer
Hi Del,

You can insert the short bolts into the holes, looking for the deep holes which won't allow a short bolt to catch the threads.  The long bolts go in the deep holes.
You might be able to pull up an illustrated parts manual at: http://www.briggsandstratton.com/display/router.asp?docid=78484
Torque all bolts to 165 inch/pounds

Good luck,
Michael
