Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Snapper with 16 HP Briggs wont start..., briggs stratton engine, briggs stratton

Question
Eric:

I have an '04 Snapper Scrambler ZTR (mid-model version) with a 16 HP Briggs & Stratton engine that won't start.

When I returned the mower to the dealer for it's first scheduled service, I informed him I was having difficulty starting the motor.  I explained that, when I turn the ignition key, the mower makes a fast clicking sound as if it won't engage the flywheel to turn over the engine.  Two weeks later I picked up the mower and was told that the offending part was replaced.

Now the mower's home and it won't start--it's still doing the same thing.  In fact, the mechanic at the dealership told me that this is a common problem with this particular Snapper.  Nevertheless, the dealer still felt "obligated" to charge for parts and labor.

The fuel is fresh; the air filter is new; the engine oil is new; the oil filter is new.  Even the battery has been replaced.  Yet, the mower won't start.

This mower has less than 20 hours of use and is in like-new condition.

Thank you for your prompt reply,

Thomas Peaden

Answer
We had a similar problem with a ZTR years ago but I thought Snapper fixed it.

If the mower is still just clicking or it seems the starter will not engage the flywheel then the exciter wire to the solenoid may be too small to handle the current.

Find the solenoid, locate the single exciter wire.  You can use a voltmeter or 12 volt light to make sure you have the right wire.  When you turn the key to the start position, the light will light or the meter should read 12 volts on the exciter wire.

To cure the problem you can run another wire along the side of the orginal one and connect it to the key switch.  The two wires can handle more current thus allowing the solenoid to work properly.

Let me know if this fixes the problem.
