Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawnmover engine tune up, lawnmower engine, discharge chute

Question
What all parts should be replaced in a B&S lawnmower engine to assure it running as when new?  The engine has never been abused and ran perfect for 6 years and now it is almost impossible to start.  I have changed spark plugs several times.  Each time I put in a new plug it will start but if it stalls or shut off it will not start again.

Thank you,  Melvin

Answer
A tune up consists of changing the oil, cleaning or replacing the air filter, replacing the spark plug, sharpening the blade, lubricating pivot points (wheel adjusters, throttle, discharge chute, etc.), cleaning carb (if necessary), checking fuel cap to make sure tank vent is clear and installing fresh fuel.  In your case, it sounds like the carb needs to be cleaned thoroughly as it is difficult to start and shuts off.  Another thing to look at is throttle cable adjustment to ensure the choke is coming on all the way.  Hope this helps.
