Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman Snowblower help, starter switch, switch problem

Question
I cannot get my snow blower started.  It is a model 536.885921 craftsman snowblower and I have user it the last 2 years but I went to fire it up this year and it will not turn over.  It has electric start and is in the garage so I know it now a temperature issue.
There was barely any gas in it while it sat over the summer and so far I have put in a new plug, filled it with fresh gas and when I plug in the electric cord and try to start it, it will try to start but sounds like it will not turn over.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Mike,

When you say, "will not turn over", do you mean it will not turn over as in "the starter will not crank and turn the engine over" or that "the engine will not start and run"?

If you can crank or turn it over, either with the electric starter or with the pull cord but it will not start:
You will need to determine if the problem is a lack of spark or a lack of fuel flow.  Remove the spark plug, reconnect the wire and lay it against the engine head.  Crank the engine over and watch for spark at the plug's electrode.

If good, then try to start it while squirting fuel or starting fluid into the carb intake.  If it starts, then the carb most likely has dirt, debris, gummed fuel or water inside.  You will need to remove the carb, disassemble it, clean all the small internal openings and blow it out with compressed air.   Probe each and every hole with a small wire.  A carb rebuild kit wouldn't hurt either.

If the starter will not crank the engine over, then it sounds like a starter or starter switch problem.  I can give you tests for that.

Let me know how you make out.
Michael
