Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): b&s generator runs to high, braket, throtle

Question
i recently was given a roll air generator with an 8hp b&s it is modle 190412 make 3058. i cleaned carb plus top end the engine runs but it runs at an extreamly high idil the engine keeps calling for power when i choke it to slow the idle it runs up and down. also there is an assembly below the carb were the engines regulator(?) the push rod from the engine runs to a braket which holds the push rod for the throtle i cant find any info. on setting this part of the engine could that need adjusting?

Answer
Hi Wesley,

The assembly that you describe is the governor.  It adds power when the engines' load increases.  First, make sure that the carb mixuure screws are set correctly.  The large, high speed mixture screw is initially set at 1 & 1/2 turns out.  The small, low speed mixture screw is set at 3/4 turn out and the idle screw should adjust the idle speed as desired.  If no change, then try adjusting the governor linkage to slow down the idle.  The voltage at the generator should remain constant through the low to high load range.

Let me know how you make out.
