Hi,
Re; Briggs & Stratton lawnmower engine Model 92508 Type 5155 01 Code 86121624 - 4 stroke

I overworked my lawnmower yesterday through long grass (wouldn't rev very hard) and it quit.  Today it ran for 10 seconds then started "popping", lost power and died.  I've cleaned the spark plug but obviously there is something else amiss.  As a secondary issue, when it is running it won't rev very hard although I seem to be able to get a little more "grunt" out of it after about 15 minutes of work.

I would very much appreciate your thougths on what might be the problem.  I know how to take the carby off and clean it (have done so in the past) but the "popping" seems to be something new.

Cheers and regards

It could be the carb or it maybe the flywheel key.  Are you familar with checking the flywheel key?

Let me know.

Hi Eric and thanks for your reply.  I'm not familiar with the flywheel key but I'll try cleaning the carby first and see what happens and let you know.  Thanks again.

Answer
To check the flywheel key you need to remove the top engine fan schroud, the starter clutch or flywheel nut depending on you engine, and then you can visually inspect the key.

The flywheel key way and the crankshaft key way should be lined up.  If they aren't then the key is sheared.  A flywheel puller is usually required to remove the flywheel when the key is sheared.

Let me know what you find.
