Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S 22hp model 407777 lawn tractor engine, faulty engine, tractor engine

Question
The engine is idling high , rpm at high power 2-3x normal. Spark plug, oil change 2 days ago.
This engine is two years old and replaces a faulty engine on craftsman riding mower, old engine spewed oil. Can this be a governor or carberator problem?  How can these be adjusted, especially the governor?  Husband quite mechanical just needs a few tips.  Thankyou, Roxanne

Answer
If the engine was running fine before, then the governor should not need adjusting.  Briggs engines have very strong internal governor parts and I have never found one broke unless some tampered with it.

High idle can only be caused by a stuck butterfly shaft, idle screw set too high or incorrect throttle cable adjustment.  I would recommend removing the air cleaner housing, the whole housing so you can see the carburetor.  Check the linkages and the governor spring.  With the air cleaner housing removed you have direct access to the governor spring.

Was the engine running fine before the spark plugs and oil change?
Let me know.
