Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): old john deere, old john deere, oil consumption

I use an 80s model R70, and when it starts it smokes a lot then stops. How can i fix it?

I am assuming you are referring to smoke from oil consumption.  If the oil level isn't overfilled, this is an indication the valve guides are worn.  Another problem could be related to the cylinder, piston and rings being worn.  If everything else is in good condition, it would worth considering a rebuild.  Hope this helps.
