Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): weed eater, crankcase, piston

Question
i have a weed eater and my brother was using it,  he didnt mix enough oil in the gas, so i guess he locked it up,  will it be easy to fix?  can u tell me what to do?

Answer
Hi Wesley,

The oil in the fuel is the only lubrication provided to the crankcase.  Without it, the piston or other parts will overheat, scuff and possibly seize.  If your engine is seized and won't turn over, you could remove the head and try to move the piston (Unless it is at the bottom of the stroke.) it by soaking it with oil and tapping it with a block of wood and a hammer.  You might luck out and get it running but it is likely that there is damage, which would require some rebuilding.

Good Luck,
Michael
