Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Arctic Cat Panther sled with no spark, arctic cat panther, harness connector

Question
Hi Marc,
I have a '72 Panther that was recently rebuilt top to bottom. It's obvious it's been apart just by looking at all the new gaskets, the carb's been apart and cleaned, and it shows signs of being totally cleaned and worked on.The only things the previous owner didn't change were the coils and voltage regulator. It even has a new ignition switch, although it doesn't act right in my opinion. It ran good one day, and the next, wouldn't start and has no spark.
Where do you suggest I start looking before it costs me more than I'm interested in spending?
Thanks for advice,Marc.

Answer
You should start by eliminating everything from the shut-off circuit.  You can usually disconnect the main harness connector on the engine and check for spark.  If you have spark, the problem is in the circuit for the key switch or lanyard (dead-man's switch), if so equipped.  If you still have no spark, you will need to consider that you have a problem with the points and condensor.  Before you replace these, you can remove the coil and have it tested separately by a shop.  If the coil is OK, the points and condensor will need to be looked at.  Hope this helps.
