Steering Column Repair: Ignition repair 94 Honda Accord, salvage yards, salvage yard

Question
QUESTION: My daughters car was stolen, for the second time.  this time they broke out Key/ignition switch to steal it.  What is the best way to get repaired, I can do some stuff on my own, but looking for a ballpark idea on cost to have garage do it. right now all we need is a screwdriver to start it.

ANSWER: Hi Todd:
Sorry about your daughter's car. Honda's are pretty easy to get and very popular to steal around the country.
The most inexpensive way to repair this one (as it does not have an anti-theft system) is to purchase a used column form a salvage yard, remove the lock assembly intact and replace it on yours.

Try this website.  I'm sure you can find what you need

www.car-part.com
It's the website all the salvage yards use when they say "Hang on--let me see if my other yard has it".  Actually it's an online database of all the salvage yards in America.  You can search by part, location or price.

Good luck
Doug

QUESTION: I did find a ignition/lock assembly(new OEM) on line for $137,for the Honda Accord DX. would it be better to purchase that or would the used be steering column be cheaper.

Answer
Todd:
The job consists of changing the same part regardless of which part you use.  I think you could probably get a complete used column for $50-$75, but use that website, put in your zip code & you'll see what's available in your area.
You're on the right track!
