Question
Douglas I have a 2001 chevy malibu the car just quit checked fuel pump/filter there ok.from what I have read this is common with this car.I was told to replace the lock cylinder housing its not cheap and many people say they keep having nothing but problems with the system. Is there a safe way to bypass the system so I dont keep dumping money in to it,if not how do I install the cylinder housing.Thank You

Answer
Hi Chris:

We run into this problem on a weekly basis, and you are correct.  It can run into a LOT of money (@$500) to replace all the components.
From your description though, I would suspect just the ignition switch is the culprit, not the lock cylinder.  Although the anti-theft electronics are in the housing of the cylinder, the sporadic failure is usually common to a bad feed from the ignition switch.
Step one...shut off the radio.
Step two...disconnect the battery
Step three...Remove the switch from the dash and unplug the shift interlock cable (key in the on position only).  then remove the 2 wire harnesses.the assembly is now in your hand and you can remove the lock cylinder assembly.  Lastly, you can take out the plug for the anti-theft connection.
The part number for the ignition switch is D1432D ...it's a Delco part and you can get it from any M dealer or parts store that sells Delco.  It sells for between $125 and $197.

You will not need to reprogram it when you replace this part, only the lock cylinder needs reprogramming.
If the symptoms reappear, then replace the lock cylinder assembly.

I hope this helps
Doug
