Steering Column Repair: ignition switch wont turn off, gmc sierra, steering wheel

Question
Thanks for your service.
I can't turn off the ignition key on my 77 GMC Sierra (1/2, 6 cyl, pwr brakes, no a/c). I have to pull the wire to the coil and disconnect the battery to stop the engine.
Can a relatively handy DIY repair this? Your basic guidance is appreciated.

Answer
Hello Jim,
It takes a few special tools to properly replace the ignition lock assembly. I see far too many cases where someone with a little know how and a big hammer thinks this is a steering wheel puller. It's not. Then there is the lock plate tool. This one is not easily improvised. Both can be purchased or rented from the a local major chain parts store. From there though, it's relatively simple if you can remember where all the pieces go.

Hope that helps.
Have a great day!
