Steering Column Repair: 68 Camaro Steering Column, 68 camaro, proper tension

Question
I am in the process of putting an original (repo) steering wheel back on my car and when I pulled the existing steering wheel off, small Grand Touring type, there was not a lock plate and center spring. Can you tell me if this is an essential component? I have checked with a number of sources trying to find these parts with no luck. If you could tell me where I could find one I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks steve

Answer
Hi Steve,
The lock plate is not an "essential" as far as the column functioning. The spring is important because it places the proper tension on the bearings and races. This would mean you need to place a washer the same thickness as the lockplate behind the steering wheel to compensate for its removal. Many racers would remove the lockplate so they could have the ignition off and still be able to steer.
Please feel free to contact me again if you need further assistance. Also comments and feedback is greatly appreciated.
Have a great day!
