Steering Column Repair: lock cylinder removal-no key- 86 firebird, gm dealership, lock cylinder

Question
Hi- I just bought an '86 firebird chassis. The steering column is locked, and there is no key. There is no glove box or key code that I can find. I have removed steering wheel, etc. and lock cylinder retaing screw but since I can't turn the cylinder to "on" I cannot get the cylinder out. Is there a way to do this w/o a locksmith or some other place to find the key code?

Answer
Hi,
You may be able to take your cars registration papers (with the VIN) to a GM dealership and get a replacement key. But since you have already disassembled the column part way, go ahead and disassemble it further and remove the sector gear. Then you should be able to remove the lock cylinder.
I'm not sure what the going rate for a locksmith in your area is, but in my area it cost less than $50 for them to make a key for it. It most certainly would be an option if you wish to retain the original equipment or if the task is too complicated. You sound as if this task is not complicated to you, so I would say... when there's a will, there is a way. I've even drilled out certain models because it was absolutely necessary to have the lock cylinder turned to remove it, but with this particular model this should not be the case.
I hope that helps.
Have a great day!
