Subaru Repair: 1996 Subaru Impreza Outback shift problem, subaru impreza outback, brake light switch

Question
I recently bought a 1996 Subaru Impreza Outback for my daughter. After a few
weeks it wouldn't come out of park so I had to depress the shift lock release
button. My mechanic has replaced the fuse three times. It works for a day or two
and happens again. So I depress the shift lock release button but the brake
lights stay on. Any ideas? Thank you

Answer
Here is what is typical , pop or coffee is spilled into the auto Trans sifter.  This causes the armature for the shift lock solenoid to stick.  We usually remove the shifter housing and spray glass cleaner onto the armature to help emulsify the pop and coffee out of the shift mechanism.  But all that being said it sounds like in your question that you are stating two things that don't make much sense to me.  1st that the brake lights are staying on, that would usually indicate a problem with the brake light switch either being out of adjustment or faulty.  2nd you stated your mechanic has replaced the fuse three times? I would suggest that the cause of the fuse blowing should be looked into.
