Subaru Repair: speedometer not working, subaru outback, engine computer

Question
I have a 1996 Subaru Outback - the check engine light came on and the speedometer and odometer stopped working.  Is it a fuse, sensor, what?  We are away from our dealer in another state.

Answer
Hello Lynne, sounds like to me you could have one of a few problems.  First I would get the engine light code.  The #2 Speed sensor could be bad, the gear the sensor is driven on could be stripped causing the sensor not to turn, you could have a shorted wire between the sensor and the engine computer, or possibly a speedometer head unit gone bad. I would check the speed sensor first, while you have it out check the gear it runs on.  Hope I could help you!
