Subaru Repair: 1999 Subaru Outback Speedometer / Odometer sticks, vehicle speed sensor, subaru outback

Question
I just purchased a 1999 Subaru Outback and the speedometer/odometer intermittenly stick. What might be the issue and what do i need to do to get it remedied? Thanks!!!

Answer
Is your check engine light on? Since you have a 99, you probably have a bad speedometer. You could have a bad vehicle speed sensor, but if the check engine light is not on, and if you have no trouble codes, then start with a new speedometer.

Speedometers from Subaru come with 0000 on the odometer. You may want to consider having the new speedometer set to the correct mileage. If you don't want that extra expense, hold on to all receipts so you can document when the speedometer was replaced. Also, your Subaru dealer can provide you with a sticker to go on your door jamb to indicate your speedometer has been replaced.
