Subaru Repair: grinding noice under the hood, subaru legacy outback, spark plug wires

Question
I have a 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback standard 2.5l.  I just had the spark plug wires replaced by pep boys--thanks to a suggestion from you regarding the CEL and rouhg running during wet conditions.

Now, I noticed that at slow speeds, I can hear a metallic grinding/rubbing noice coming from under the hood.  I thought this may be the front break pads, but I think they checked them at Pep Boys, and also, I had them done about 20,000 miles ago, so I don't think they should be worn.  Also, the grinding doesn't seem to be directly related to breaking, but when I roll at slow speeds, I can definately hear a rubbing (metal on metal) happening in a cycle, ie: the faster I go, the quicker the rubbing noise.  I am not sure if the speed has anything to do with it, or if I can just hear it better at slow speeds.  Any suggestions on this??

thanks

Answer
Did the wires fix the problem?

Best guess on the noise is the brake pad wear indicator is rubbing, and you need new brakes; or, the backing plate is rubbing the rotor or rotors. Also, if the brakes are not worn, but the rotors are real rusty or a lip has formed on the rotor in the part the pad does not fully contact, maybe that is the problem. Call Pep Boys and see if they can document the brake check. If they cant, have them checked. Good luck. Z
