Towing Issues: Towing a Travel Trailer, 2006 toyota tundra, rear shackles

Question
I just purchased a 30' Max Lite Travel Trailer 5300 lbs.  I am going to pull it with a 2006 Toyota Tundra V8, 4.7L.  The manual states the maximum I can tow is 7200lbs.  I am still a little hesitant pulling with this vehicle.  Should I be worried?

Answer
That's a big trailer for a half ton truck. I am surprised how light it is and would check the true weight loaded up at a public scale. I would think by the time you load it up with supplies, water, propane, etc. it would be closer to 6 to 6.5k. Just don't go over 7k because most trailer axles are rated at 3.5k each. You could save some weight by emptying gray, black and fresh water tanks before trips and most campers do.

I would think there would be sway issues especially if you have all terrain tires with C or D load rated tires. Also the factory rear springs may not be heavy duty enough depending on the tongue weight. You will know if the truck is squatting too much and make sure the rear axle isn't sitting/riding on the bump stops. A weight distributing hitch helps but it's not a cure all. You could add helper springs or air bags but the rear shackles are now the weakest link. I can't remember if tundra's have pan hard/track bars on the rear axle but that helps control some sway.

Another factor is what type of geography will be travelled? If most of the travelling is in the mountains or hills the engine, transmission and brakes may not be up for the task. Hopefully your truck has external oil and transmission coolers which is included in most factory tow packages. How much travelling is planned? At this point I believe you understand how close you are reaching the limitations of the vehicle without any room for error. If you chose a heavier duty truck or start changing springs, tires, etc. on the current truck the ride quality will  change especially when you are not towing.

My opinion is a dually but a true heavy duty 2500 will do you fine also. I would think "white knuckling" your trip in the tundra will take away from the adventure or you won't take as many trips. Let's face it you have a big trailer. Anyways, congraulations because they are nice travel trailers. Also, if you find any nice spots, let me know!
