Towing Issues: how to find a car that has been towed, towing company, dmv office

QUESTION: about a year ago, my car was towed. it sat in the towing yard for a year, then it disappeared from the yard. how can i find out where it went to and how to get it back? the towing company told me that if it was in good condition, they were going to sell it after they got the title from it, but i have not seen it out where they sell their cars at.

ANSWER: If you own the vehicle you can go down to the DMV office and run a title search to find out if it has been sold. The towing company is required to keep records of all abandoned vehicles and the disposition of that vehicle if it is sold. They should have the records. Have you contacted them directly? They may have moved it to another storage lot if they have one.

the car   QUESTION: actually we did not get the title transferred in our name, it was still in the original owner's name. i will contact them and see what has happened to it, it would cost too much now to get it out if they still have it, but how long does it take the get the title after they have requested it for a abandoned vehicle? i have tried telling the people that i have some papers in the car saying that we bought it from a dealer, but they will not let me go into the vehicle to retrieve it. they say that i have to pay the fees to get inside. if i am going to pay the fees, why not get the car out? can they do that?

ANSWER: I don't understand what you want. If you know where the vehicle is (ie the picture) then you will have to deal with the towing company. If you have paperwork in the vehicle that is proof you purchased it then they should let you get the paperwork. Why and when was this vehicle towed? As for the title, the towing company does not get a title, they get paperwork from the state for an abandoned vehicle. The time varies from state to state. If you did not transfer the vehicle in your name then they would have no way to notify you.

QUESTION: the car was towed because of my paper plate in the back, was expired and lapse of insurance. but they want me to pay the towing fees just to get the paperwork. and also they said they were going to file for a lost title and when they got it, they were going to sell it.

If the car was towed a year ago I can't imagine what the storage fees are. The towing company cannot file for a "lost" title. They have to file for an abandoned vehicle title. Did a police department impound the vehicle or was it a private property impound?
