Towing Issues: Getting Personal Property from Towed Car, personal belongings, towing company

Question
State: New Jersey (NJ)

I had my car towed. I want to get my personal belongings out of the car from the towing company. They want my title in order for me to receive my personal property. This does not seem legal. I cannot get my car at this time but would like my stuff.
Do I need to speak with a lawyer?
I am more than happy to involve the police if it comes down to it.
I would like to bring in supporting documents in if I am legally allowed to get my property without my title. They already have my information.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Answer
Why was the vehicle towed? I would definitely contact an attorney. In most states (depending on why the vehicle was impounded)a towing company can place a lien on personal property in a vehicle. Whether they can demand a title or not is a matter for an attorney. The towing company can file for an abandoned vehicle title if the vehicle is not picked up, but there are certain requirements. The local PD may not help but it can't hurt to call them to see.
