Towing Issues: Right to Tow Junk Car on Rental Property, vehicle identification numbers, best bet

Question
I am the owner of a two family property in Bloomfield, NJ and a tenant has left a car in the lot for months with one flat tire and one missing wheel. It is beginning to show rust.  Tenant keeps saying they'll deal with it, but no progress.  Can/should I tow it?  Should the police be involved?  Thank you.

Answer
New Jersey has some tough impound laws thanks to the new state "predatory towing laws passed...

I do believe that you have to have the police come out now and either run the plates - Vehicle Identification Numbers to make sure it is not stolen and then they allow it to be impounded.  Not totally sure here as the laws have changed several times recently in the last year. I try to keep up but its hard.

Best bet is to call the police and they should tell you what the proper method is for having it towed.
Course the police showing up can also kick the tenant into gear about taking care of the problem.
