Towing Issues: Towing of tenants car/trailer, local police department, towing companies

Question
I have a tenant who has parked his truck and small boat trailer on our property for over 6 months without moving it.  Do I have the right to tow it?  How much notice do I have to give?  Also, my tenants complain that people other than our tenants are parking on our property - do they have the right to call to have those cars towed? Or does the property owner have to be present or signs posted?

Answer
You as a property owner have the right to control who parks on your property.. After all they are trespassing on it if they do not have authorization to be there..

Now the next answer is more complicated as your rights as a property owner are also regulated when it comes to having vehicles removed from your property depending on what state, country or even city you are in...

You can tow the vehicles in some areas without signs being up. Some areas, you have to have signs up spelling out who can park, among other wording.. Some areas you can sign a contract for a towing company to "patrol" the area and remove the offending vehicles.. Other areas you have to physically be there to sign the authorization to tow.

Best answer is to check with the local police department as they should have an idea of what laws are in effect in your area... Next best thing would be to check with a few towing companies in your area and see what they say can be done.
