Towing Issues: hauling a tow dolly., tow dolly, toyota tundra

Question
I have a friend in a tight financial spot who needs to get his car towed to a service facility.  I'm trying to help avoid a hefty tow truck charge by offering to haul his vehicle (mid-sized hatchback) via rented tow dolly.  I have a Toyota tundra with a V6 engine and auto transmission.  It only has a bumper hitch, no axle hitch.  Is this a safe towing situation?  I don't plan on traveling more than 20 miles under load.  Thanks for your help

Answer
Ensure the bumper plate is stamped 3,500lb, and the top of the ball is less than 25" from the ground and all should be well.  I wouldn't worry about it too much for such a short trip but the rental agency has the final say as to whether or not you can tow the dolly with your truck.

In my opinion, the truck is more than capable, the bumper is strong enough (if stamped 3,500 lbs.), and it is safe.  All this is assuming the car weighs less than 2,800 lbs.

Best of luck,
