Towing Issues: car shopping, jeep cerokee, grand cherokees

Question
I shuttle rental trucks, and was wondering about "chase vechicles" (simmular to RV Dinghy)
I was thinking about a Jeep Cerokee/Grand Cherokee, but some people I've talked to say they know people who have burnt-up automatic trannys in such vechicles.
I say so long as the T-case is "out of gear" it shouldn't matter.

Answer
Keith,

Generally speaking, Cherokees and Grand Cherokees (4x4) are flat towable with the transfer case in neutral.

However, there are exceptions.  Always double check the exact year, make, model and transfer case to ensure it will be flat towable.  Also, if the units these people burned up were indeed flat towable, it sounds as if they put the transmission in neutral and not the transfer case.

Good luck,
