Towing Issues: Which vehicle to tow behind RV, honda cvr, lube pumps

Question
We plan to buy a vehicle to tow behind a diesel pusher and are confused as to which is the best kind of vehicle to get. We have heard the Honda CVR and the Jeep are good, but don't know about other vehicles. We own a 2002 Bravada, but the book says not to tow it. Help, please! Any specifications? What about any modifications?

Answer
Jim, these are my favorite types of questions.  Ones where the work is done for me.

You will want to check out MotorHome Magazine's annual Dinghy Tow Guide.

http://www.motorhomemagazine.com/dinghytowingguide/index.cfm

It lists most of the vehicles that are flat-towable as-is.

You can tow many vehicle not listed in the guide, they will just require more work/expense to make them suitable (driveshaft disconnects, lube pumps...)

As far as the Bravada is concerned, if it is SmartTrack AWD you can tow it with the addition of a lube pump to circulate transmission fluid through the transmission and transfer case.

Also, you may want to chat with people either online at one of the many rv oriented web sites or at rv parks themselves.  There is nothing like first hand experience.  Just remember to take everything with a grain of salt.  Personal bias will skew the results for sure.

Good luck,
