Question -
Can a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport with automatic transmisson & 4WD be flat towed?

A local dealer advised to put both transmission and transfer case in neutral. Please comment.
I appreciate your help.

Ken,

If your Cherokee has a 241 or 242 transfer case (it most likely does) it can be towed as-is.

Just put the transmission in Park, the transfer case in Neutral and unlock the steering by turning the key to the 'off' position (one click back from 'Run').

Answer
As long as the transfer case is in neutral it makes no difference whether the transmission is in gear or not.

However, if the transmission is in park you will be unable to tow if the transfer case is not in neutral.  If you choose to tow with the transmission in neutral and mistakenly do not put the transfer case in neural, plan on buying a new transmission.

The transmission in park is not mandatory, it just makes it a little more foolproof.
