Toyota Repair: 2002 Toyota Celica Door Ajar Light Problem, toyota celica, door switches

Question
Hi Ted,

I have a 2002 Toyota Celica and recently the door ajar warning light on the car remains on even though all the doors are properly closed.

The real problem is that the light staying on drains the battery.

I would appreciate any help that you could provide me.

I went to the local autozone and they said that it may be a bad door switch, but they said they can't get the part.

Also, is there a way to disable the warning light, so that my battery doesn't keep draining?

Answer
If the door ajar light stays on then the dome lights should also stay on when set on the "door" setting. If not put it on the door setting and make sure it's on when closing all the doors from the outside. Open the left door and phisycally push the door coutesy switch located on the door jamb all the way in, if the light goes off, this switch is ok, close the door and go to the right door, do the same, if the light stays on then this is the switch that needs to be replaced, either one of the door switches could be the problem, if the light goes off when pushing both switches then the doors may not be closing all the way and may need to be adjusted. The switches are dealer only items.
