Toyota Repair: 1999 Camry odd noise at low speed, cv shaft, spinning the wheel

Question
I have a 1999 Camry with 120,000 miles on it that is making an odd noise when the car is rolling about 5-10 mph. When going straight, the front left wheel makes a sort of bumping or clicking noise, but it stops as soon as you turn the wheel and is unnoticeable at higher speeds. This occurs even if the car is in neutral, engine off, with no brakes on and is simply rolling.
I suspect the problem is the CV shaft, but I was also wondering if it may be the differential. As far as I know, the CV units are original parts. I raised the front of the car and put the transmission in neutral but could not recreate the sound by spinning the wheel. However, the height of the suspension means the CV-angle is changed when the wheel is raised off the ground.

Any ideas?

Answer
hi joel, it sound like you are on the right path.  it sounds like you've got a failed cv joint.  did you check out the rubber boots that cover the joints?  if the boot is torn for an entended period of time, the joint can get excessive slack in it.  you could also have a hub bearing going out on that left front wheel.  next time you lift it, try to move that wheel from side to side.  i've never seen a differential crack on that model of vehicle...but anything is possible (the 2000 ish sienna had alot of problems with the differentials exploding)
