Toyota Repair: toyota cressida auto fault, toyota cressida, transmission troubles

hi there ted!
my neighbour has above car 6cyl 91 model, he has been told by various mechs that the g box needs changing!
the auto wiil not change from 1st when you first drive it but once you have gone 500metres it works fine and does everything its surposed too.its as if the engine temp has a direct effect on the trans ,the symptom only does it on the first start of the day.any help on this would be great as this is my new neighbour!(iwould look super clever-but i will tell them about you in the end)

Unless it has already been done the first thing to check is that the transmission fluid is at the correct level,if so there may be a problem starting happen with the transmission, cold shifting or slipping problems are the first indication of transmission troubles.
