Toyota Repair: Toyota Camry, engine oil pan, 4 quarts

Question
My dad did an oil change on his 2000 Camry. We added the new oil, checked the level and it said it had too much. So my dad was going to let a little out of the pan and recheck, even though we know we only put 3 and half quarts just like the book said, and low and behold, nothing came out of the pan.....What's up? Where did it go? And what do we do?

Answer
I think what happened is that you drained the transmission oil instead of the engine oil and then added oil into the engine, let my try to clarify this, underneath are two oil pans, the one to the right of the car is the engine oil pan, the one on the driver's side is the transmission oil pan, remove the drain plug on the engine oil pan and rain any oil form it, it's a 14mm standard size drain plug, the transmission drain plug could be the same size so it's easy to get them mixed up, remove the transmission oil pan drain plug and drain any oil all the way out, after that put in 4 quarts of oil into the engine for a 4 cylinder and 5 qts for a v-6, put in 2.7 qts of transmission fluid into the transmission dipstick tube for a 4cyl and 3.5 for a v-6, please note that the engine dipstick is yellow and the one for the transmission is red.
