Toyota Repair: 1990 4Runner Shifter Shroud - Stuck Key, soap and water, solenoid

Question
Hi Ted, trying to change the shifter shroud on a 3VZE automatic. In order to replace the shroud I have to remove the shifter handles. The 4WD was easy enough but the main shifter has me  puzzled. I removed the 2 screws and the clip inside the handle but there is a power cord going to the OD.  That is as far as I got. I reassemble without installing the new part and from that time on I have not been able to remove the key from the ignition without disconnecting the battery. Thank you in advance for your help.

Answer
You can cut those two wires and the resolder them back together it's a lot easier than trying to remove them from the shift interlock solenoid, it sounds like the shift interlock solenoid is stuck this normally happens when drinks containing sugar are spilled into the console, try spraying the inside of the shift meahanism with a solution of soap and water, it may free up the solenoid.
