Toyota Repair: Timing Belt on 01 4Runner, timing belts, toyota dealer

Question
I recently go the news that I am requiring 90K maintenance on my 2001 4Runner 2wd. I was quoted a price of $550.00 by a national chain. I then went to the Toyota dealer and was quoted around $275.00. Neither one could tell me a reason as to why the price difference. Could you explain to me what the need is for new timing belts when I am have no trouble with the car? How urgent is the need for a new timing belt?

Answer
What the dealer quoted was the price for the basic 90,000 mile service which seems very reasonable, the timing belt is due to be replaced at 90K miles also, which would bring the preliminary total to about $550.00 to $600.00, the national chain qouted a price that included replacing the timing belt and the dealer did not, which is correct because it is up to the customer to authorize the belt replacement, it should not automatically be included but it should be recommended to the customer as well as any other additional parts and services that may be needed.
