Question -
I have a 1998 Toyota 4runner SR5 with an aoutomatic transmission and 4 weel drive. My question is for the last year or so I have an issue whenever I take my truck out in the rain. If it is a pretty substantial rain (enough to really wet the car) the headlights will turn on sometime after the car has been parked, the headlights are indeed in the off position they just come on and drain the battery. I have a hard time getting the lights to turn off when this happens (if I catch it and it doesn't kill the battery first), the only way  I have found to turn them off is to pull out the headlight fuses. I have had it in for this issue a few times and they weren't able to reproduce the conditions that cause the headlights to turn on. In fact if I take it out for a drive it can take several hours for it to happen after I turn the car off even if they were "stuck" on when I started the car.The battery is new (we had it replaced after the first time this happened when we were told it may be the 6-7 year old battery causing it). At first I suspected it had to do with the alarm system but we don't use the alarm at all and leave it in the valet mode.

Thanks for any suggestions you can give!!

may have a Headlamp bad relay.

Answer
I have seen a bad headlight switch do that also, but not in a truck.Something internal shorts when damp and turns on the relay.

The only other thing,  looking at the wiring diagram would be a shorted wire that would ground the HEAD relay. Like water in the fuse block under the hood, or corrosion.
Was the vehicle in an accident?

I checked and there are no service bulletins issued by Toyota for that complaint.
