Toyota Repair: Cold start problems, toyota 4wd, adjustment screw

Question
Dear Ted:
I have a 1986 Toyota 4wd, 22R 2 barrel carb. On cold starts it fires up quick, but I must keep tapping the accelerator to keep it running, (will not idle). After about a minute the engine will idle on its own, and the rpm will slowly increase to a point I believe is to high. This will take about five minutes, at which point the engine will cough and sputter for a couple of seconds and then smooth out and run fine. Although I have set the idle adjustment screw all the way out, the rpm is still way to high.
Thank you for your time helping me with this problem, Andrew.

Answer
The the choke operation, when the engine is cold remove the top of the air cleaner, push the gas pedal all the way down and release it, look into the carburetor to see if the choke plate is almost all the way closed , if not the choke is sticking open, in that case free it up with some carb cleaner and keep moving the plate until it will close on it's own when the throttle is depressed.
