Toyota Repair: landcruiser clutch, clutch master cylinder, clutch action

Question
Ted-
I have an 87' cruiser that has 160k on it.  I'm having problems with the clutch.  It seems to be very loose.  You have to push it almost all the way to the floor before you feel any sort of pressure.  I noticed about five days  ago, that the reservoir tank was empty.  I then refilled, after that everything was fine.  Then two days ago I was unable to switch grears at all.  Again, I refilled the tank and the clutch action improved.  This is obviously only a temporary fix.

Do you have any suggestions about what I should do next?

thanks for your time.

Answer
There is an hydraulic leak in the system, the most common are the clutch master cylinder and the release cylinder, check the master cylinder by looking inside the firewall for any fluid, check the release cylinder on the transmission, you may have to pull back the rubber boot to see if fluid is coming out. If either one of the cylinders is leaking replace them both.
